FAQ
Who answers my alert?
Our highly skilled and well-trained team of incident response team will be the ones to answer your emergency alert. Our team has a combined operational experience of over 80 years in this space! They are trained to coordinate the correct response services to attend to your emergency or put you in touch with someone who will be able to assist you further. They will assess the situation and decide on the best course of action to resolve your alert.
When can I use the button?
The ProtecTour SA emergency alert button can be used in many different situations. Are you feeling unsafe? Has a crime taken place? Are you experiencing car trouble? Has someone been injured? Are you lost or confused in an unfamiliar area? No matter the situation, don’t hesitate to push your ProtecTour SA emergency alert button! Our team is available and ready to help you 24/7.
What if I can't answer the call?
We understand that some emergencies may prevent you from answering our calls after activating your emergency alert. Should this be the case, don’t panic. Our team will have access to your location at the time you push your emergency alert button and dispatch the closest officer to your location to assess the emergency, report back to the team, and then assist as best they can while waiting for additional help to arrive.
Where does the button work?
The ProtecTour SA emergency alert button works throughout South Africa, where there is mobile phone coverage (see https://www.gsma.com/coverage/#551 for Vodacom and https://www.gsma.com/coverage/#317 for MTN). Whether you're at the top of Table Mountain or deep within Kruger National Park, you'll have access to our 24/7 incident response operators.
What happens if I activate the emergency alert accidentally?
That’s okay; accidents happen! If your emergency alert button is activated, accidentally or on purpose, our incident management team will contact you to ensure you are safe. You can also test the emergency alert button once your account is active by using the “TEST” button in the ProtecTour SA app, 100% free of charge.
If I’m in trouble, can’t I just call the police?
While you can call the police, the reality in South Africa is that many people rely on private security and emergency response teams due to underfunding, understaffing, and overwork within the South African Police Service (SAPS). ProtecTour SA ensures your safety with our highly skilled team. However, if a crime has been committed, we will involve SAPS, as it is not only important but also a legal requirement to report crimes to the official authorities. Nonetheless, we will be there to help you every step of the way.
What happens if I run out of airtime or data?
If you run out of airtime or data, no problem! The ProtecTour SA app is “reverse billed” so even if you have no data or airtime, the mobile app will still work. If data coverage is a problem then you can still reach us through a toll-free number (0800 100 911) also available in the web app. We recommend saving this number in your contacts.
What happens if I don’t have phone signal?
There are very few places in South Africa with no signal. However, if you find yourself in an emergency without signal, we will be unable to assist you until you are able to make contact with our IMC. In such cases, we suggest you try and get to higher locations where signals normally reach or get closer to small towns where GSM signal is available.
Why do I have to add all my personal details? What will you do with this?
For our incident response team, it is crucial to know any identifying physical characteristics, what medical conditions you may have, your medical aid details etc.
What happens if I buy a temporary sim-card in South Africa?
This is perfectly fine! If you initially registered with your permanent number but plan to use a temporary SIM, you can change your contact number in our app when you arrive in South Africa. It's essential to keep your phone number updated so our response team can reach you in an emergency.
